Can I purchase a cable box to use with my high definition cable from time warner?

high time
Klaus and Mea asked:

Currently we are renting a box from Time Warner, it is close to $50.00 a month to rent (High Def DVR). I want to find and purchase a box to replace this one.

    Short answer: probably not.

It’s up to the cable company and, typically, they do not allow this.

I have the same equipment from Time Warner. They charge me 5.95 monthly for the HD box and another 7.95 for the DVR feature. I have no idea why your charges are so high.

The cost you pay is for the service. The box just unscrambles the code. Your rental fee is probably closer to $8 per month with the remainder paying for the service. There are bootleg cable box unscramblers I have seen advertised (I don’t know if they work with HD – and I am pretty sure they are not DVRs) but if you use them, I believe your are technically stealing cable. I would probably just pay for the box (maybe get rid of the DVR and HD component for a cheaper rental and monthly service).
