Does the food cooked in a crock pot taste better being cooked on high for a shorter time or low for a longer.

high time
TEXAS MADE asked:

Never used my crock pot before, tomorrow will be the first time. The recipe I have says to either cook on low for 8 to 10 hours or on high for 4 hours. Will there be big difference in the taste of the meat? Will the meat be more tender if I cook on low for a longer amount of time?

It definitely tastes better on low for longer… It tastes better and everything is done and yes, the meat is more tender

The meat will be much more tender if cooked long and low. It tends to be tough if cooked high and short.

I prefer the low setting and longer cooking time–it does depend on what you’re cooking, if it’s a roast the lower temp, longer cooking time is better, the meat is more tender and I think the flavor is better. However, I did put pork chops in my crock pot when I left for work one morning, and came home 10 hours later to find—shredded pork chop soup with bones in it!!! If it’s a larger cut of meat–low temp for the 8 hours.

Meat becomes more tender if it is cooked at a low temp for a long time. This is called “braising”.

Try both ways, with different types of meat. Some people prefer meat that’s so tender it does not need to be sliced. Others prefer the meat with a little body left.

It tastes much better on low for longer. Nothing like putting it in the crockpot in the morning & coming home to the whole house smelling yummy! One of my favorite things to make is pulled pork….5 ingredients…pork, diced onions, bottled barbeque sauce, apple cider vinegar & brown sugar. So easy & so yummy. Have fun with your crockpot! (a little tip…add salt & dried spices the last hr…especially for soups…it results in you having to use less)
