How can you stay focused while driving at very high speeds (180km/h+) for long periods of time?

high time
Jon B asked:

how can you maintain the high levels of concentration required when driving at very high speeds (180km/h +), for a long period of time?

There are some roads in australia, for example, where there are no speed limits and you can drive at these speeds for hours if you want.

Sorry, but if you have trouble staying focussed, you are a danger on the road, and at much lower speeds than that. I suggest you seek out what distractions you have in your life and deal with them before you kill yourself and/or somebody else. And if you are willing to pay the gas at today’s prices for driving that speed you have more money than sense.

don’t worry, you’ll stay awake; you’ll mostly be scared shitless.

Many people can’t. And those that can’t end up road kill. My friend (last summer) was driving from NYC to LA. He was goofing around with his son (instead of focusing on driving) and drove over a 25 foot cliff. They all survived (many with horrible scars). My friends basically lost the use of his left arm.

So how can you? Many don’t…

    Drive safe.

Get trained, be prepared to recognise when your concentration is past its peak, slow down and/or stop when you need to.

If you are going to drive at speed then you should (though many don’t) take a professional attitude to your driving. Get advanced training. Realise that while it is safe to drive fast in places there are reasons why you shouldn’t (in no particular order): lack of knowledge of the road (hazards), traffic on the road, your own physical and mental state, vehicle abilities, vehicle condition, road condition, weather, light levels…..

At high speed you need to be focussed on driving, not on music or mental arithmetic. It may b e better to stop and rest/sleep for an hour than to try to plough on.

Advanced training will take your driving to a new level, not just in performance, but in enabling you to concentrate, observe and respond.
