How much class time for High School Music?

high time
CharlieF asked:

My school has audition Jazz Bands and Show Choirs, and requires enrollment in a basic music class to be eligible. This makes music take 25% of total class time every day of the week to be eligible to play in an elite band. How much % of a day’s schedule is the norm for music electives in High School?

That’s a broad question. In our high school, students take 4 classes per day, each class lasting about 2 hours. So, if they took one music elective, then it would take up 25% of their daily schedule. Go to a high school 5 miles away, and the students there have 6 classes per day, each class lasting 50 minutes. If they take one music elective per day, they are dedicating 16-17% of their instructional time to music.
