Open Minded UU asked:
What are some good college-prep part time jobs for a high school student?
My resume is really good and I’m basically a 16 year old looking for extra income big time. But, I’d also like it to be college prep and look good to colleges… so what would you reccomend? Thanks.

As a 16-year old, you’re not going to be making “extra income big time” unless you’re very good at sales and you work a commission-based job. But these types of jobs may not have the college-appeal you’re looking for.
Colleges like community-oriented people, so look for a position with a charity, but more than just working at your local Goodwill. See if there’s a Meals-on-Wheels in your area where you can help, or check out local retirement homes and see if they need any volunteer help.
And there’s the problem with charity-oriented positions. You might be scoring big time karma points with your future college, but you won’t be making a lot of cash.
The third option is to get career-relative experience, but that can be pretty tough for a 16-year old, then again, where there’s a will there’s a way. If, for example, you’re interested in Law, and you’ve got the report card to back yourself up, contact some local Law Firms, ask if they do Pro Bono work, and ask if they’d like someone to help them out. You may find you’re doing nothing more than carrying around files, making copies, getting coffee, etc, (essentially an Intern) but at least you can put that down on your Resume (the experience, not that you made the coffee runs
Good luck!
In high school, I worked in retail. I started in fast food and moved to working in clothing stores. I took the initiative and got friendly with the managers so I could learn more. They were nice people. In the summers I worked as a camp counselor and loved it. The pay was terrible and it was hard work. I got to spend the summers outside and hanging with my peers and kids. I got babysitting jobs from it as well. In college, I worked at a dry cleaner. It was great because when it was slow I could read or study or do homework. My parents were friends with the owners.
