What happens to you if your blood sugar runs really high for a long time?

high time
Dainlynn asked:

My MIL has diabetes and I just found out that she can’t keep her blood sugar any lower that 430. I know this is really high and I’m wondering what could happen to her? How does one “die” from diabetes

There are many web sites about diabetes that you can check online and get helpful information. Your MIL needs to be in contact with a good doctor and on medication. Hope she is.

Diabetes itself does not kill you, it is the complications that arise from poor blood sugar management. if your mother in law is always up above 400, that is a severe problem that could lead to complications such as heart disease, kidney failure, blindness, and neuropathy which can lead to amputation of limbs. Not all of the complications are fatal, but they are if left untreated.

Your mother in law needs to make some adjustments, go to the doctor and get on a new treatment plan, get some exercise and get on a good diet plan so that those blood sugars will lower. Stress the importance that it has on her future life, and how it would mean a lot to you if she made those adjustments.

A bloodsugar of 430 and is way out of control. Uncontrolled blood sugar levels over a period of time can do damage to all your organs, nerve endings. She should be seeing an endocronologist ( a doctor that specializes in diabetes). I would not waste any time with a high blood sugar like that.

Neuropathy, blindness, heart problems , kidney problems, you name it she get it.And finally a horrible death.
I would like to know the problem she is having about not being able to keep sugar lower than 430… Thats a lot of BULL. She either is carbing like a horse, needs more meds. or needs INSULIN>
I forgot to mention STROKES. Many many strokes , if you live through them.
Now, This is how my mother died. Blind for 10 yrs. Numerous strokes, and felt like **** all the time. Her last day, she felt like she was burning up. But her temperature was 94. It was 20 below 0. While waiting for me to get dressed to take her to the hospital she sat in nite gown on the porch still complaining about being hot. Got her to hospital , and the buttholes would not see her for 10 hours. Well with a temp of 94 your body is shutting down. She died 12 hours later. I fought with the nursing staff, with the police and the useless doctors to get her help. To no avail. So if you have diabetes don’t count on the medical profession to help all the time.
She died on the death certificate of heart attack. Not one word about diabetes as a cause or contributing factor.

I noticed all answers before me did not answer question about how you die. I was just wondering!!

The immediate danger for your mil with a consistent high BG is diabetic ketoacidosis. These is an emergency that must always be treated in the hospital. DKA can be fatal if not treated because it can cause the brain to swell. Long term complications from diabetes can cause death by damaging the heart, kidneys, blood vessels etc. It is a truly horrible disease.
