What is reasonable time for a high school athlete to run 4 miles in ?

high time
cocovan asked:

This is simply a debate I had with a co-worker. I used to jog, or run – however you choose to define it – when I was in high school. I stated I did four miles in 30 minutes, and my co-worker stated that was a very fast time. I disagreed. So what is “descent” time for a mediocre high school athlete to run four miles in ?

I would say that is just slightly fast…
    40 minutes?

Sounds decent. We had to run a 6 minute mile to make varsity b-ball. Four 7:30 mile times shouldn’t be hard to imagine for a high school athlete who trains to run four miles. This person was probably a fatty with gravy oozing out the sides of his or her mouth.

it depends on what you mean by “athlete”.. if you’re talking about your average football player, then 30 minutes would be a stretch.. but if you’re talking about a distance-runner in track, 30 minutes wouldn’t be unreasonable..

30 minutes is definitely reasonable. I ran cross country and track throughout high school and practiced with athletes from several different teams (football, basketball, baseball). Although the competitive runners definitely finished our distance runs ahead of the other sport athletes, a great majority of them ran at a pace quicker than 7:30 per mile, so I have no doubt you too could have accomplished this task.
