What is the average time for a high school 40 yd dash?

high time
dopes asked:

What is a decent 40 yd dash time for high school football? I’m a sophomore at 5’9 @ 160 lbs. I just ran my first dash w/o cleats and the coaches didn’t teach us the form yet since it’s tryouts. I ran it in 5 flat.

The fastest at my school is 4.6, so I’d say it was fine.
I have never heard of an “average” 40 yard dash time.

That’s pretty slow for someone your size. I would think the average time for your size and age should be a 4.8 max. 5.0 is jv quality. I would advise that you get closer to the ground when you run. It should help you take a tenth or two off your time.

well, lots of factors apply: stride, leg & arm power, how long u’ve been running, height… but the fastest in my school is a 4.2 (corner back) i’m 6’1 running a 4.9 (i should be faster) and the average person ur size… is about a 4.8 or 4.7, it all depends on the factors above and what ur position is because the coach will teach u different running techniques according to ur position.
