Start by reading Consumer Reports April Auto Issue available at your library. Most reliable makes are Honda and Toyota. While Civics and Corollas may cost alittle more, historically they have been the most trouble free. Buying from a brand dealer may cost more than from an individual but will come with a limited warranty. Check out individual sellers only if they hvae service records and you have a mechanic to check out the car. Better to pay $50 to $75 to find out what the car needs, if anything. Good luck.

We own a 2006 Hyundai Accent a small subcompact car that is also from South Korea. We have had no problems with it and absolutely love it. As for safety it has curtain side airbags and front side airbags standard and the Aveo doesn't have curtain side airbags available at all. The sound system has 6 speakers and the interior is very nicely done and very simple. The Toyota Yaris has absolutely amazing fuel economy however the speedometer is located awkwardly in the center console and is smaller than the Accent, safety may also be a concern. The Kia Rio is also very similar to the Hyundai Accent.

Go for the Smart car - engineered to roll over safely - and roll over, and roll over.... don't get the cabriolet (convertible) model though. It will just roll over onto your head and slide.
